At a conference on artificial intelligence and ethics held at Stanford University on the same day, Schmidt said, "I think the problem about China should be solved in such a way that we need to reach their top scientists." Schmidt did not directly mention us policy, but his comments came as the US government was considering an export ban on more critical areas of technology, including artificial intelligence systems and quantum computing. The US government accused alphabet's Google of sharing technology with Chinese companies and the Chinese government. Schmidt cleverly responded to the accusation of the US government when talking about us China relations. "We also benefit from a common framework, and tensorflow is one of them," he said.

Tensorflow is Google's open-source free software library for creating artificial intelligence tools such as image recognition. Schmidt said Google has made a big push in China, "and now almost everyone in China is using it."

Schmidt resigned as chairman of alphabet at the end of 2017, but still serves as the company's technical advisor, and is the company's third largest shareholder. In addition, Schmidt is now chairman of the U.S. Congress and the Department of Defense's AI Advisory Committee.
