The mission sent NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the international space station via a manned dragon spacecraft.

According to surging news reports, since the retirement of the U.S. space shuttle in 2011, all the tools for American astronauts to and from the space station depend on Russia. This mission is the first time for US astronauts to enter orbit from the US mainland in a US spacecraft since 2011. It is also the last test flight of SpaceX for NASA's commercial manned space program. It will provide key data of Falcon 9 rocket, manned dragon spacecraft, ground system, in orbit, docking and landing operations.

The launch of the manned Longfei will normally carry 4 astronauts, but the spacecraft itself can accommodate up to 7 people. The spaceship will be launched by SpaceX's main rocket, Falcon 9.

Both vehicles are reusable. The first stage booster of the Falcon 9 rocket can be recycled and used for launch again. SpaceX also recycles the Dragon spacecraft, and plans to do the same for the manned dragon spacecraft.

Different from the Dragon spaceship carrying out cargo missions, the manned dragon spaceship has added an emergency stop system to separate the spaceship from the rocket in case of emergency during the launch process.
