Microsoft CEO: if Google exits the Australian market, Microsoft will fill the gap

Google has run into trouble in the Australian market. In 2020, the Australian government issued a law requiring Google to pay for the media content of search and news push, and negotiate with local publishers and broadcasters on the payment price. If no agreement can be reached, Google and Facebook will accept mandatory price arbitration. The Australian government said that for every $100 spent on online advertising in the country, a $53 was taken away by Google, a $28 by Facebook, and only a $19 for local media. After that, Google threatened to stop its search business in Australia and withdraw from the Australian market.

Microsoft CEO Satya NADELLA said yesterday that if Google leaves the Australian market because of differences between the Australian government, Microsoft hopes to quickly fill the gap, according to Neowin, a foreign media source.

As early as last August, Google wrote an open letter criticizing the regulation, which is called the "code of practice for news media price negotiation". After Google threatened to withdraw from Australia, Australian Prime Minister Morrison responded: "Australia has made rules for domestic affairs, and Australia will not respond to Google's threat."

After that, the Australian Prime Minister had a discussion with Microsoft CEO NADELLA. Microsoft hopes to expand Bing's search engine business to Australia and fill the market gap brought about by Google's departure. Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed the same issue with Australian Communications Minister Paul Fletcher in a video conference.

It house understands that Australia plans to pass the law in the next few weeks. Because Google has a huge influence and has been working in the search and advertising market for a long time, even if Microsoft wants to fill the gap, it will take some time to prepare.
