Intel teams with MediaTek to create 5G modems for PCs

Netease Technology News on November 26, according to MSN website report, although Intel has announced that it has abandoned the development of 5G smartphone modems, but it is determined to introduce this technology to personal computers-for this reason, it has been looking for a partner. Today, the chip giant announced that it will work with MediaTek to create 5G modems for laptops and other personal computers, enabling these devices to benefit from the "always-on, always-connected" benefits of 5G technology. MediaTek will develop and deliver the technology; Intel will define specifications for 5G solutions, provide optimization, validate designs, and provide the technical support needed to integrate 5G modems into personal computers.

The two companies are expected to see their first collaborations in early 2021. They will also cooperate with Guanghetong from Shenzhen, China, to produce Intel-based M.2 (a solid state drive) interface 5G module.

Both Intel and MediaTek have great interest in promoting 5G technology, so this cooperation is not surprising. Although Intel has announced that it will no longer be involved in the mobile modem business, it knows that 5G technology may be crucial for the future development of personal computers-of course, personal computers remain at the core of the company's development plans. This ensures that it can own 5G technology without having to invest a lot of resources. For MediaTek, this is more based on its expansion ambitions. The company has already invested in 5G technology for mobile phones, but this cooperation has given it an important position in the field of 5G personal computers.

Of course, the two sides took this action under external pressure. Qualcomm has been trying to launch 5G laptops based on its own chips. Although they are still in the research and development stage, consumers may soon be able to buy a device equipped with a Snapdragon chip, whose cellular data transmission speed is comparable to the fixed Internet access speed. If Intel and MediaTek do not cooperate, they may give up the market to their common competitors.
